July 11 - Fish Fry and race.

Lots of members came out for the race and the fish fry. A reporter from the Beacon Herald was also there for the start of the race.

Excerpt from Beacon Herald:

Members of the Wildwood Sailing Club competed in the annual Rum Runner Race dressed as pirates on Saturday.

NICOLE SCHMIDT

Staff Reporter

Sails were up and swords were out as members of the Wildwood Sailing Club hopped aboard their boats this weekend to take part in the annual Rum Runner race.

This year marked the ninth pirate-themed race, but for the first time costumes were incorporated into the competition. Despite the sun, sailors were dressed in tall boots, floppy hats, wigs and bandanas.

The racecourse was set up around Wildwood Lake, where eight boats made their way to the starting line to complete the one-hour loop. Race committee chair Les Leonhardt said that with the wind conditions that day, there was only one thing competitors could do in preparation — pray. Rob Johnson and his son Wes were the winners of this year’s race, making it their fourth Rum Runner victory. Johnson has been sailing for nearly 40 years.

Dave McDonald came in second place two minutes behind the Johnsons.

In keeping with the theme of the event, winners were awarded a bottle of rum.

Pirate Themed Fish Fry

Once again Christina Dillow out did herself in organizing the Fish Fry Dinner, and thanks to Gerry for the fries. Was great to see so many members dressed up. Check out the club's photobucket site for more photos.

Club Breakfast 2014

On Sunday, May 18, a beautiful sunny day, 35 club members and guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast which traditionally marks the start of the sailing season. Bob and Rosemarie Schwalm prepared honey garlic sausage and western style scrambled eggs which were the stars of the breakfast. Pam Mulholland prepared toast, and juice, and members rounded off the buffet table with fresh fruit and various pastries. Gerry Cappleman provided coffee for a great finish to a great meal.

Following the breakfast tables were removed from the pavilion in preparation for the spreading of stone dust on the pavilion floor. The flagpole was installed, and all is in readiness. Let the sailing season begin.

Spring Cleanup 2014

We had a great turnout despite the chilly weather. Pavilion was set up, tables cleaned, gutters dealt with. Grounds were expertly raked but due to the unseasonably cold weather there was no prep work done on the docks beforehand so they were only partially installed. The rain date May 4 will be used to finish the job. Club meeting followed. For more photos click here (WSC photobucket) and for even more click here (Pam & Lorne's site).

Rob and  Margrit Johnson were hosts of the annual pork chop supper. The pork chops were delicious along with all the salads and desserts provided by members. Margrit is pictured with one of the napkins which she made for club members as part of the social committee's efforts to go green.

Thurman Reynolds announced that he is stepping down as Grounds chair. Many thanks to Thurman for a job well done. We are looking for a member to fill this position. Please help out if you can.

The Wildwood Sailing Club wishes to extend a huge thank you to the Hyatt family for 27 years of grooming the lawns at the sailing club. Shane Hyatt first took on the job as a teenager and his dad, Ian, took over when Shane went away to college.

The grounds at the club have always been  beautifully maintained, and it is going to be very difficult to find a replacement who takes such personal pride in a job well done. Ian and Helen are lifetime members of the WSC, and we hope to see them at the club frequently. We also wish them all the best as they take more time to enjoy their cottage in the Haliburtons.

A thank you is also extended to Pam Mulholland for contributing so much of the website content this year.

September 26, 2014 - Pull outs

Four boats were pulled out late afternoon. Guess how many didn't have trouble. More photos on photobucket, click here.

Boat 1's first attempt, wheel fell off ramp (trees were trimmed), rollers not right so back in she went.
Boat 2 - problem getting
the rudder off that someone forgot to remove. Good thing someone heard it scraping on the ramp.
Boat 3 - results after four  attempts, a snapped line and a broken winch. Just a wee bit off centre.
Boat 4 - successful after just one try.
Well done!!

Dock Pull was well attended and it was a most beautiful day. Check out the WSC photobucket page and Lorne & Pam's page as well.
